Simone Dinnerstein, piano

Having performed on celebrated stages both in the U.S. and abroad, American pianist Simone Dinnerstein has fast been gaining international attention with her masterful interpretations and “utterly distinctive voice” (New York Times). Critical acclaim from the Philadelphia Inquirer places Dinnerstein “in a league with any of the great Beethoven pianists of our time.” Her performance will include the music of Bach and Beethoven, as well as modern works by Phillip Lasser and George Crumb.

Cantus

Recognized as one of America’s finest professional male vocal ensembles, Cantus enjoys a vigorous schedule of concerts throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. The Washington Post hailed the nine-member ensemble as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power,” and refers to their music-making as “spontaneous grace.” Performing a blend of music that includes classical and popular, sacred and secular, the ensemble’s repertoire includes numerous commissioned works as well as music composed and arranged by its members. Past collaborations include performances with Bobby McFerrin, the Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Pops.

Lionel Loueke Trio

Lionel Loueke’s musical style represents a mixture of his West African heritage, blended with traditional jazz elements and modern compositional techniques, creating an artistic voice that is truly unique. Legendary pianist and composer Herbie Hancock described Loueke as “fearless,” and stated, “I’d never heard any guitar player play anything close to what I was hearing from him.” Loueke’s recent solo debut album, “Karibu”, was released by the prestigious jazz label Blue Note Records and he also appears on Herbie Hancock’s “River: The Joni Letters,” the 2007 Grammy award-winner for Album of the Year. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music and Thelonius Monk Institute for Jazz in Los Angeles, Loueke has received critical acclaim from the notable jazz publications Downbeat, JazzTimes and Jazzwise (United Kingdom), as well as the New York Times.

Alisa Weilerstein, cello,
and Lera Auerbach, piano

The duo of Alisa Weilerstein and Lera Auerbach brings two rising young stars to the Bailey Center: Weilerstein as one of the great cellists of her generation and Auerbach as an acclaimed pianist and one of today’s more popular composers. Their combination of virtuosic prowess and passionate artistry makes this collaboration something truly special. In 2009, the pair thrilled audiences at the famed Caramoor Festival in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The program will include Auerbach’s own Twenty-Four Preludes for Violoncello and Piano, op. 47, paired with works for cello and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich.
